We all want more happiness in life. Happiness quotes seem to be the most popular quotes during all times in life because everyone wants more happiness in their life so that they can enjoy their relationships, career, free time, alone time, and every other time more. We are really starting to learn that the things that we think should make us the happiest are not actually what boosts our happiness for the long run. The following happiness quotes focus on how we can really have happiness no matter what is happening in our lives.
1. Let Others Make Up Their Own Mind
According to Dan Gilbert, natural happiness is the type of happiness we experience when we get what we want. You know the feeling. You find something you like, then you find something better, then you get it and you feel great! Or, you decide to do something for yourself out of your routine and you feel great! When you have the freedom to make up and change your mind, you can make choices that make you naturally happy.
Remember this when you are trying to tell someone else what they should choose or how they should think. Making up their own mind and changing their own mind is one ticket to natural happiness, so allow them that freedom! And make sure they allow you your freedom to choose too.
2. Bring Happiness To Others
I find a lot of people want to be happy themselves before they do anything for other people, but they are missing an important point – doing for others brings more happiness to you.
Do what you can do to make other people happy. When you do, you not only bring more happiness to their life, you also bring more confidence and inner strength into your life. Moreover, you feel more purpose in your life, which is a natural way to increase your happiness in your daily life.
3. Grow And Give Your Way To Happiness
According to Tony Robbins, feeling good about life comes from growing – and feeling a sense of purpose, and having a sense of ‘we’ instead of ‘me’. We all know this is true. When we become more successful or learn something new, we instantly feel happier with ourselves. And when we take into consideration more than just ourselves, we feel more useful in life because we are helping other people have a happier and more fulfilling life.
4. Enjoy Everything You Can
This is one of the happiness quotes I have applied to my own life in a big way, and I have found that enjoying the process of life is a huge ticket to real happiness. I took this lesson from an older woman I knew who used to enjoy everything that happened in her life with a smile and a sense of excitement. She enjoyed car rides. She enjoyed seeing people. She enjoyed going out for a meal. She always found delight in the expected and unexpected things in her day, and even though she didn’t have much in the way of material things, she was extremely happy with her life.
When you can enjoy what comes at you throughout the day, and smile and laugh at life, then you naturally feel very happy. It doesn’t matter how much you acquire in your life, if you can’t enjoy the things, people, and circumstances that come into your life, then you are not going to be very happy.
5. Be Like A Child
Kids are pretty much happy unless you make them unhappy. But, as adults, those roles reverse and we can be pretty much unhappy unless someone makes us happy. Yes, we have more stress and worries than kids do, but we also take a much harsher approach to life, and we focus more on yesterday and tomorrow than we do today.
There are many happiness lessons you can learn by watching children, but I think one of the best is how they take life moment by moment. They enjoy what they are doing in the moment and stay curious as they go from task to task, which brings us back to the notion that you should be enjoying everything you can.
6. Your Happiness Meter Is Not Predetermined
If you think that you are doomed to follow your parents ‘happiness steps’, then this is one of those happiness quotes to help you feel more hopeful on how happy you can really be. Yes, it seems that your happiness level is influenced by your genetics. This means that if you have grumpy people in your family, you definitely can become just as grumpy as they are. But that’s only half the battle. What happens to you in life determines how happy you are, and the way you choose to perceive and behave might have a very big influence on how happy you are.
In other words, even if you are born into one of the unhappiest families in the world, that doesn’t determine how happy you are going to be. If you think in a positive way and behave in a positive way, and have a good method of dealing with life circumstances, then you have every reason to believe that you can be just as happy as someone who is born into a happier family but chooses to focus on negative things and act in a negative way.
7. Stop Looking At Yourself In The Mirror And Get A New View On Life
Everyone I know has had the experience of looking in the mirror and feeling just a little bit less happy. In fact, there is a commercial that says almost every woman has an ‘I hate my body moment’ at least once a day. I know many men who also are not happy with their looks and base a lot of their self-importance around their looks, just like women do. How are we supposed to be happy when we are basing how important we are, or how happy we can feel, on something as silly as our looks?
Happiness can come from feeling great about ourselves, but when it comes to our looks, we’re never going to maintain a high sense of satisfaction, and if we base our happiness around our looks, we are never going to maintain a high sense of happiness. Therefore, we need to break free from lumping how we look and our happiness together.
This happiness quote was taken from a talk on self-importance and why getting free from it is the key to happiness. The little exercise of spending a day or two without a mirror will help you focus on so much more than how you look today. It will be an eye-opener on what really affects your life and makes you happy.
If you are interested, search Google for ‘a week without a mirror challenge’ or ‘a month without a mirror challenge’. When you read the experiences that people have had with these challenges, you will see that they learned much more than just how to focus on things other than their self-consciousness. The sense of serenity felt, along with other positive emotions, all contributed to their happiness in the long run.
8. Happiness Takes Work
It would be nice if we could snap our fingers and become happier, but it doesn’t work that way. We feel the way we feel because of the way we think, our attitude towards life, how we go through our day, how we perceive other people, and how we perceive ourselves. All of these things add up and determine whether we feel good or not, and the way we think and act today is going to be the way we think and act tomorrow unless some permanent changes are made.
Making changes is hard. I don’t need to tell you that. Everyone already knows this. It’s hard to change the way we react to situations and act throughout our day, and it’s hard to change what we believe most in life. But, they are worth it when it comes to our happiness.
9. Practice Gratitude
I was talking with a friend yesterday about how important gratitude is. This is one of the happiness quotes I had to send her because it is absolutely a quote that sums up what gratitude is.
Our conversation was geared towards some people we know who always complain and never see the positive in any situation. They are very unhappy, and they have the power to make other people unhappy as well. We were saying that if they could just fine a sense of gratitude towards things in their life then they would be happier.
Happiness is itself a kind of gratitude. It’s feeling contentment and satisfaction, and looking at things through a perception of enjoyment rather than unhappiness. So, practice gratitude! The more you can see things through grateful eyes, the more satisfaction, pleasure, and enjoyment you will have.
10. Happiness Is A Choice!
We talked about how happiness takes work and requires change, but happiness boils down to choice. You always have a choice whether or not you want to do things that make you happy or see things in a way that make you happy, or if you want to do or see things in a way that don’t make you happy. You always have a choice. It doesn’t matter where you are, who you are with, what you are doing, or anything else, it only matters how you choose to view and react to what is going on.
This is why two similar people can have a very different experience in the same situation. One person may have had a bad day, and choose to perceive the situation poorly, while the other person may have had a good day, and choose to perceive the situation in a positive way.
What I have found is that even if you have a bad day, you can choose to be happy. You can choose to want happiness more than you want to dwell in a place of negativity. When you have that mentality, the choice may require some effort depending on the situation, but you can make the choice to be happy.
11. Happiness Is Not A Destination
So many people buy into the notion that they will be happy when they have something or someone or some sort of success that they have been desiring. As many people know, getting what you want does not equate to happiness. It just equates to getting what you want.
Yes, you may feel a twinge of excitement when you get what you want, but research has shown that the happiness that you feel from getting what you want is very short-lived. If you are not happy when you get what you want, then getting what you want is not the make you happy. Happiness is more of an internal thing that you maintain throughout your life.
Happiness is about being kind to yourself and being true to yourself. It’s about following your passions in life and enjoying the process. It’s about spending as much time as possible in the present moment and enjoying your life as it happens. It’s about going to the ups and downs with the least amount of resistance possible. It’s about understanding that other people do not always play in the same way you do. It’s about acceptance.
All of those things are not going to happen simply because you get something that you want. They require a shift in mindset, habits, attitudes, and beliefs. And they require a constant dedication to making those changes a part of your life.
12. Here’s How To Clearly See What Affects Your Happiness
Shawn Achor is a happiness researcher. This is one of the happiness quotes taken from him while he was speaking to Oprah about happiness.
It’s important to really reflect on this simple truth about happiness. We are in a period of time where we have quick access to information and almost anything we want. It’s a time when we can get whatever we want quickly to satisfy our wants.
We also have better health care and freedom to be we want to be and do what we want to do. Many of us are not in fear for our lives or worried about the lives of our family members. And we all have the luxuries that make things easier on ourselves. Yet, despite all of those things – that seem like they should make us happier, we are not.
To me, this is a huge indication that it’s not about having more, it’s about living more. It’s about being able to enjoy the moment and our relationships and the direction of our life as opposed to having more in our life to stress us out and make us feel unhappy.
We may not all be able to go back to basics, but is important to remember this quote when you think that having something external, or having things easier, is going to make you feel happier than you do right now. It really wouldn’t make a difference. A large portion of the world has shown us that. You have to look inwards first before you can be happy with anything that is in or happens in your life.
13. Don’t Get Bummed Over What’s Passed
If you feel like a lot of your happiness is gone because something or someone has been lost, then this quote is absolutely for you.
Feeling like we lost something or someone can drain out all of the desire to do what we need to do to be happy. Sometimes it just feels easier to give in to the negative feelings and dwell on the loss that we have experienced. But the thing to remember is that everything and everyone will eventually leave your life in some way. All experiences start and all experiences end. Nothing is going to last forever in your life, and understanding that and accepting that is very important to maintaining a consistent level of happiness as things come and go from your life.
Think of it this way, everything happens for a reason, and appreciating that and feeling gratitude towards it, even after it is gone, is the best way to focus on being happy for what is still in your life. Be grateful for what has happened, feel grateful for what is happening, and feel grateful for what is going to happen.
14. Fight Loneliness
Loneliness and unhappiness seem to go hand in hand. Furthermore, in the same talk I pulled this happiness quote from, Robert Waldinger discusses how people who are lonely have a shorter lifespan.
This doesn’t mean that you need to have 1 million people in your life, but if you feel lonely, you need to do something about it. This research was taken from one of the longest studies on happiness, so it’s not just something that they are guessing about. Loneliness really does affect happiness, and even if you are surrounded by many people, you need to make sure that you feel connected, understood, valued and appreciated in life. Those of the elements of will help you feel less lonely and part of something bigger than yourself.
Of course, I know a few people who have very few people in their life and are not at all lonely. In the talk that Robert is giving, he does specify the fact that it is the feeling of loneliness that causes the unhappiness. Therefore, it seems that even if you are by yourself, but don’t feel lonely, your happiness can still be high.
15. Practice Acceptance Rather Than Resistance
If you are resisting what is, then, of course, you are going to be unhappy. Resistance means that you don’t accept what has happened or is happening. Acceptance and happiness go hand-in-hand.
When you can accept that things happened the way that they did, you will feel better about what has happened. When you can accept that people are going to be who they are, you will feel better about those people and your relationship with them. When you accept that life is not always fair, you will feel better about the unfair things that happen.
You don’t have to like everything that happens in life, but you do have to accept that it has happened and there is nothing you can do to change what has happened. When you are able to do that, you’ll feel much less resistance towards the reality of life and much more happiness.
16. Quit Worrying About Everything
Worrying is a complete waste of time and it has a huge impact on your happiness. When you worry, you make up all kinds of scenarios that are likely to come true in your imagination, and they usually have a pretty negative tone to them.
You might worry about failure or rejection or loss or sadness or some other negative and unwanted thing. And the more you worry about it, the more you believe that it actually might come true. This puts you in a state of fear instead of happiness.
You cannot experience fear and happiness at the exact same time. It’s just not possible. In fact, you can’t experience any negative emotion and happiness at the same time. That is why it is so important to quit worrying about things.
The truth is that you don’t have much control over your future. You can do the best you can for today and hope for the best tomorrow, but life’s circumstances can impact even your best intentions. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do your best today because doing your best today will definitely give you the best outcome for tomorrow, but it does mean you need to remember that there are no guarantees in life.
17. Don’t Go On A Happiness Quest
Instead of going on a quest for happiness, go on a quest for personal growth, better relationships, and a desire to change. Those are the things that will help you become happier, and without them, you will never be able to experience the happiness that lasts from day-to-day.
Happiness is a byproduct of doing better things for yourself, other people, and the world around you. It’s a byproduct of making the right choices and choosing to see things in a more positive and meaningful life. It’s a byproduct of being true to yourself and living a life that you want to live. It’s a byproduct of everything else that we talked about with these happiness quotes. It is not a place on the map that you can find without doing the work that you need to do.
18. Yes, YOU Can Be Happy!
Since happiness is a choice, you really can be happy no matter where you are in life. Accepting where you are now and wanting something better yourself are two ways to start feeling happier today. When you accept where you are right now you can eliminate a lot of the resistance in your life. And when you want something better for yourself, you can get motivated and then do more for your life.
You can start to visualize those dreams and goals and start coming up with ways to go after them. Just knowing that you have a plan in place, and that you might be able to achieve the things that you want to achieve, will help you to become happier right now, in this moment, without anything in your life changing beyond that.
19. Can Money Buy Happiness?
We’ve all heard it over and over again that money can’t buy happiness. But is that really true?
When you have a lot of money you are able to do what you want, when you want, and how you want it. You’re able to help your family and your friends and even people you don’t know. You’re able to make a big difference in this world and in other people’s lives. You’re able to go out with a friend you haven’t seen for a while and do all those things you love to do together. It seems to me that money and happiness can definitely go together and that money is not an evil thing that everyone tries to make it out to be.
Don’t limit yourself from bringing money into your life. Money is not an evil thing unless you are an evil person using it for evil things. If you are a good person with good intentions then you’re going to use your money for good things.
If you want more happiness, strive to follow your passions the best you can and create goals to further your career and increase your income. The good thing is that as you immerse yourself in the things you love to do, you will actually be drawn towards things that can help you bring more income into your life.
For example, I have a friend who loves making candles. She was actually quite passionate about making candles as a hobby, and because they made her feel so good she searched for avenues to make money from candle making. Now she has a thriving candle business that supports her and her family. She can do what she wants to do with her days, and she is very happy. And, it all started from a place of satisfaction and happiness, and the desire to bring more money into her life.
20. Create The Life You Want
This quote pretty much sums up happiness. If you are in a state of creating, then you are going to feel purposeful and alive. This includes creating the life that you want, creating the home that you want, creating the relationships that you want, creating the goals that you want, creating the business that you want, or anything else that you create.
Creating is the action of bringing things into existence that matter to you. Seeing your creations come alive is a great way to experience happiness on a day-to-day basis. Seeing is believing, and knowing that you have the potential to create great things gives you the motivation to keep creating great things, and great things can only result in more greatness in your life!
Even Kevin Smith (aka Silent Bob) said, “Human beings are at their happiest when they feel they’re at their most productive.” When you are attempting to create things in your life, you are being productive. You don’t have time to sit down and be bored because you are too busy creating the life you want.
By the way, another one of my favorite happiness quotes is from Kevin Smith – he said, “Happiness can’t be bottled. It can’t be smoked, swallowed, shot or ejaculated.” Oh, how true that is!
The point is to get creative! Write down what you want in your life and find ways to make it happen. Then start taking action on what you want and creating the very existence that makes you feel on track, purposeful, satisfied, fulfilled, and all those other important things that add up to happiness.
