14 Carpe Diem Quotes To Help You Seize The Day

Carpe Diem is often used for emphasis after saying something that urges someone to make the most of the day and what they are doing. It is a useful piece of advice that reminds people to slow down and seize the day. While different people say it in different ways, such as ‘you only live once’ there is no denying that carpe diem is a powerful message that we want to embrace and to live. Following are some carpe diem quotes to remember when you get caught up in tomorrow instead of today.

1. Stop Making Time So Important

One of the problems that we have living a carpe diem lifestyle is that we are always watching the clock and living by the calendar. This can cause us to forget about the present moment as we focus on what is to come and how quickly it is coming.

Obviously, we can’t get rid of our clocks and calendars, but this is one of the carpe diem quotes that can help you look at time differently. You may have 365 days in the year, but how many of them are you really making use of? 50? 100? 300? The best way to make use of all of them, and not waste a day of your life, is to seize the day – every day.

2. Get Out Of Your Shell

47A lot of people live like an oyster, trapped in a shell, unable to get out and enjoy the world. But, man was not meant to live that way! We were meant to explore and experience, and you can’t do that when you are trapped in a shell.

That shell is limiting beliefs that keep people stuck from really making the most out of each day. If you are stuck in those limiting beliefs, you need to crack them in some way so that you can start living life.

For example, you may shatter your belief that you can’t go out and have fun on weekday nights, or you may need to get rid of the belief that you can’t enjoy things while other people have it so bad. What limiting beliefs are holding you back from carpe diem?

3. Today Is The Day To Create Your Future

48Some carpe diem quotes show you exactly why you need to seize the day, and this is one of them. What you do today determines what will happen tomorrow. Your decisions and actions influence your tomorrow in some way. So, if you want to have more success, a better relationship, a healthier body, or anything else, then make the most of today and do the things that will help you get where you want to be.

4. Stop Waiting For Tomorrow

49This is another one of the carpe diem quotes that will help you make the most of your day. Recognizing that opportunities are in the here and now is important. You may be waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect weather or the perfect response from someone, but if an opportunity – even one that doesn’t seem like a sure thing – comes right now to have fun or create a better tomorrow, then seizing it will help you feel more alive and move faster to where you want to be.

This is part of the law of attraction. You don’t know when opportunities are going to come and give you a chance to get what you desire. It could be today, and if you don’t take hold of those opportunities, then you are missing out on a chance to get what you desire quicker. Unfortunately, many people never seize an opportunity when it is presented to them, because they are always waiting for what they believe to be a better moment, and they never get what they really desire in life.

5. Stop Sleeping Your Life Away

50You might be sleeping your life away and not even know it! How can you seize the day when you are asleep? The simple answer is that you can’t.

If you are stuck in a certain frame of mind, or close-minded, you are closing off your awareness to new opportunities and lessons in life.

If you are not willing to see that there are many ‘truths’ in life and they are all based on perception, then you are not willing to look beyond your ‘truth’ and open your eyes to what is actually happening around you.

If you are stuck in a routine that is all work and no play, then you are that oyster that we already talked about – stuck in a shell (limiting beliefs) that don’t let you seize the unique day that is happening right now.

It’s so simple. Wake up and live. Start taking advantage of the day and all the surprises that come to you. Start opening your mind up to new possibilities and new ways of thinking. When you do, you will become much more aware of the world around you and feel much more alive.

6. What Does Today Offer?

Oprah and the message of carpe diem go hand in hand. An older relative of mine has embraced Oprah since she joined Weight Watchers, and I’m thankful that Oprah is making an impact on a brand new group of people in terms of opening their minds up to meditation and new ways of living, and not just counting points.

Living in the moment means that you need to use all of your sense, or at least a lot of them. This is why sitting down for dinner with family is so important. You are tasting, talking, hearing, seeing, and really being alive in the moment.

When you want to feel alive at any random moment, remember to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance. That is one of the ultimate ways to enjoy the moment with all of your senses and get back into making the most of the day.

7. You Will Die

One scene from Dead Poets Society focused on carpe diem, and it is a powerful scene that anyone who has watched the movie remembers. In it, Robin Williams asks the students to look at the faces of past students on the wall, and he goes on to show the current students how the boys on the wall are similar to them, believing they are destined for great things and that the world is their oyster. And then he points out that the boys on the wall are now dead, and then, he asks the boys to listen to them. They lean in, and he whispers ‘Carpe diem. Seize the day boys. Make your lives extraordinary.’ It’s a powerful scene that I recommend watching!

We tend to go through life thinking that our future is guaranteed. We plan what we are going to do in a month, year, or decade from now, without really believing that we will be dead. But, we could be. That’s the sobering truth. So, seize the day and make the most out of it, because you will die one of these days, and you won’t get a chance to create your future anymore.

8. If You Are Alive, It’s Not Too Late To Seize The Day

53I know some people who are stuck in the ‘why bother’ mentality, where they don’t want to seize the day because they have wasted so many days that they don’t believe it’s worth it. This mentality will help you avoid seizing the day until the day you die.

Why bother? Because today, you can make it happen. You can start to make your dreams come true. You can be happy. You can feel fulfilled and alive and in control of your life. Because you are alive! That’s why!

9. Why Not Just Live In The Moment?

54I can’t think of one could reason not to make carpe diem your attitude in life. Why wouldn’t you want to live in the moment? What good comes from living in the past or the future? Nothing! You can’t create your future by living in the future or past. You can’t experience everything that is happening around you by living in the future or past. You can’t grab hold of opportunities by living in the future or past. So, why not just live in the moment?

10. Things Don’t Always Go Your Way

55What you expect for tomorrow may not happen. In fact, as most of us know, it usually doesn’t happen. We want sun, so it rains. We want things to go smoothly, so a million obstacles come up. And when that happens, we get upset and move ourselves out of the moment and into a state of regret or anxiety. Not very helpful for a carpe diem lifestyle!

Therefore, make it about today. Take what comes, work with it, and make the most out of every moment that you have. If you always live with that mentality, then you will handle everything that comes in life much better, even if it is not even close to what you expected.

11. Do Things That Make You Feel Good

One of my favorite carpe diem quotes, this reminds us that you got to do what feels good. It doesn’t mean you need to eat the whole dessert cart, but, at least, have one! Don’t punish yourself by denying yourself what feels good because feeling good is what life is all about, and you may not get a chance to do it again.

12. How To Start The Day Carpe Diem Style

When you open your eyes, look around, feel grateful for another day of adventure, fun, and love. Count as many blessings as you can, and you will start your day off on the right foot. It will set the tone for the rest of the day as you remember why today started off so important for you, and why you need to refocus on what matters – making the most of it!

13. Today Is A Gift Many People Don’t Get

58Not a lot of people get to experience today. Some people were never born. Some died directly after they were born. Some died yesterday. Some don’t have the ability to be aware of today.

You have a gift, which is called ‘today.’ It is a gift that allows you to see all the beautiful things in the world, have fun, love, and experience being loved. Each day you choose to ignore those things, it is like kicking that gift in the teeth. Other people who are not as lucky to have the gift of today would give anything to experience life the way you can. Remember that when you feel like going back to bed and sleeping the day away.

14. Teach Yourself How To Embrace The Carpe Diem Attitude

Your whole life has probably been focused on how to make a living and focus on the future. Could you imagine if you were taught from a young age how to live in the moment and seize the day? What a difference that would make to your life. Instead, you were probably taught how to stress out about the future and stay stuck in a mentality that doesn’t allow you to enjoy the moment.

The good news is that you can teach yourself to embrace the carpe diem attitude. All you have to do is read carpe diem quotes like this, convince yourself that living for today is the best thing you can do for yourself, and then practice seizing the moment. If you do that, you will be giving yourself the education you should have received since you were a child – the education that makes life worth living.
